12 Dimensions Critical Reflection

Final Reflection

12 Dimensions Critical Reflection

Part 1

I have learned in the Intercultural Studies about the 12 Dimensions. Below is five of the most dimensions I feel they reflect somehow my personality.

Growth:
The growth dimension have two polarities. People & Material, on people style people tend to focus in investing in people more that the material. They consider the effect of decision on the others and what their impact. While the Material style is more about focusing in investing into the systems, building and other materials. They are consider on how their tasks are achieved.

Decision Making:
In Decision making the polarities are Rules and Relationships. As it shows Rules is more about following the rules and regulations very serious as final words, it is simply described, as Deal is Deal. In addition, when it comes in Relationship it more about taking your decisions based on the relationship between you and the other party even if this results on not following the rules.

Communication:
The two polarities of Communication are Direct and In Direct. On direct style, people concerned about how things are said. They Express views and opinions in a loudly and they are do not have any issue in discussing anything in public. While In Direct style is more to avoid any public discussions and Focus on how it is said things.

Status:
Status have very interesting polarities, Ascribed & Achieved. They are similar to other dimensions, almost the opposite of each other. Ascribed is when people consider getting things based on xx and not their hard work. While on Achieved is simply reflect people who thinks everything are achieved by hard work.

Expression:
The polarities for Expression are Revealing and Concealing. In Revealing, style people are very emotional and they are easily touched. They also have strong facial expressions and body language. While on Revealing style, they are not to reveal what they are feeling usually. Moreover, they have self-controlled behavior.

Part 2

Based on my CMi Report results compared to my group. I can make the flowing conclusion & analysis of the following dimensions:

Growth – Personal Polarity:
“Investing in growth mainly thought the development of people” as quoted from the report, I showed that I focus on investing more in people. In addition, I use developing the team leadership to influence the bottom line in a positive way. This will benefit the group so much in my point of view since I believe people is more important than any material.
Compared to the group I think I have given more consideration on material too, because if I just focus on personal, which it may lead to some issues.
I totally agree with the results since I cannot consider Material anyhow more important than Personal. Persons are the real assets and everything comes after.

Decision Making – Relationship Polarity:
The report shows that I am almost in between Rules & Relationship polarities with more tendency to Relationship. So When it comes to take or make decision its depends on the situation. I may follow rules sometimes and relationship on others. In spite of my point of view and my Preference, Unfortunately this may result on confusion especially with people who prefer to deal on one polarity.
Being in the middle of the Dimension it helps me to take what I think it is the best suitable Decision for the situation in spite if it is related to rules or relationship.
In this dimension, I fit on the middle of my group results, which reflect that I have a good understanding on how to deal in different situation properly.
The report said that I was focusing much on Relationship, however I think I am quite mixed and taking in consideration every Decision individually.

Communication:
As the report results shows I have pre tendency of being Direct and I feel comfortable with this type of communication. I like to appreciate & hence, I mix my communication with indirect style with some people as respect.
Compared with the group, I fall in the middle of the direct style, this mean that I have good understanding on how to use both styles although I follow the direct communication.
I agree with the report for my results as I follow the direct communication but I tend to use In Direct style when I feel it is more suitable.

Status:
As per the report, I am totally Achieved Oriented. I learned that status always are achieved with hard work and do not think it is appropriate to consider on relationships more than the efforts persons did such their academic results or other performance.
I fall on the max of Achieved polarity, and compared with my group where all of them fall in different categories in achieved polarity I think it is healthy. Because Ascribed oriented is creating issues in societies.
I agree with the report results, because when it comes about status, your hard work is what you have to show me, don’t you ever rely on our relationship.

Expression:
In expression, It shows that I am conceal oriented. I feel uncomfortable to discuss or express my own feelings with others. As well as I usually control my emotions.
When comes to the group, the results vary from Reveal polarity to more tendency on conceal. For myself I fall in the middle of the group result as well as the conceal polarity which I thinks it is a good thing because it means that I express my feeling in normal way compared with the group.
Although the results show is me in the conceal polarity, I think they magnified it because I feel I am less concealing that the report says. I tend to express my feeling based on the situation and the person in front of me and I may be comfortable to discuss it.

Part 3

As I reviewed the report, I came to conclusion that this results may most probably vary in the coming 5 years.
This is simply because I believe that self-development is an endless process. People should adjust and improve himself regularly. Improving our self didn’t mean that we have to Give up on our principles but its more than respecting our self’s and others. That is why I would like to be different in the future. Nobody is perfect and as the Arabic famous say’s “Nations are what their morality is and what remained of it  ... But if their morals are gone they are gone too"

Reflections:

3. When he gets on the train, he cannot find an empty seat. How is this problem solved for him? How might this be a cultural solution?

A Kid noticed Todd standing and he allow him to seat in his place. As will the boy allow himself to seat in Todd’s Laps. This could be a normal solution for similar congestions situations in India and means no harm for both side’s since Todd is Elder and this may reflected as a kind of respect.

4. As any exchange student, he has a lot of experiences trying new food. His first encounter is with an iced drink. What happens?

When Todd arrived to India, he was thirsty so he tried the first drink on his way, the iced drink, without knowing what it was exactly. After meeting Puro, Todd knew that not so many tourists accepts the iced drink and they become ill after drinking it. Todd became sick the day after drinking the iced drink.

7. Todd wants to check in to a hotel. But Puro insists he comes to a boarding house. What is the reason he gives Todd?

Puro convinced Todd that he shouldn’t be alone and Aunti Ji will take good care of him.

8. As soon as they meet, Aunti Ji starts asking very intimate questions that Americans who have just met would never ask. What kind of things does she ask?

Aunti Ji Asked about his relationship, if he is married or having a girlfriend. And would he like to meet a local Indian girl, also about his salary and his sexuality orientation which he felt uncomfortable.

CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD MAKE DECISIONS

How does Culture/ and the 12 Dimensions influence:
Life Choices?
Thinking?
Sense of Group / Accountability?

Cultures does have a lot of influences from the 12 Dimensions. Taking Amish community as an example; it’s showing clearly how they are considered as Concealing Communities because of their way in dealing with the surrounding communities. Some think they are very weird community just because they have a difficulty to accept any change in their life style. Likewise they are also somehow have an Exclusive Connections between their community beliefs and others which they don’t like to share or discuss.

In addition to that, they way Amish is currently living support the idea that they are weird and very strange community. Since it’s very difficult to live without electricity or even cars in transportation. Amish have no issues in that at all as they used to it and they are happy in avoiding any form of technology. They use horses as a way of transportation and it also go further to their clothes and what they eat.

However we cannot skepticism that all of that made the Amish community a sustained which supported by their high sense of Community Accountability.
